After spending most of his career collaborating with Danny Boyle on films like "Sunshine" and "28 Days Later," Alex Garland makes a compelling directorial debut with "Ex Machina," a smart, twisty/turny sci-fi story with a visual appeal that is among the best I've seen all year. All three of the lead actors do a fine job bringing subtlety to a film that has a lot of interesting things to say about humanity and today's technology, which is brought to you on a visually stunning and dramatically involving plate. "Ex Machina" is genuinely fucking cool.
