I’ve been wanting to see this movie for a while now, since I keep hearing it’s one of the best movies ever made. I also heard all of Ozu’s movies are really slowly paced, so I was I kept putting it off. You really have to make the conscious decision that you’re going to watch the movie the whole way through no matter what, because about 10 minutes into it I really wanted to change the channel because of how slow the pace was. HOWEVER, it was kind of amazing how emotionally involved I was by the end of the movie. It sneaks up on you. You really get attached to all the characters and their own personal pain. I’ve found myself thinking about it a lot after watching it, especially the relationship between the parents and daughter-in-law. I need to watch it again.
I recommend it, but only if you’re ok with a very slow paced movie. It’s a very patient movie, which is its strength, though can feel like a weakness at first.
