Straight Time

One of the most underrated films of all time, the movie has tons of great performances, by Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, Theresa Russell, Gary Busey and Harry Dean Stanton. I happened to see Dustin Hoffman at a Q&A, December, 2008. When asked what his favorite film of his was, he replied he didn't have one, but he wished more people would have seen Straight Time as he was proud of his performance. I agree, as it was astonishing to find this little gem.
