"Separation" is an innately broken film comprised of two completely different and painfully mediocre movies. It's sometimes a shallow human condition drama about child custody in the spirit of "What Maisie Knew," while the rest of the time a dull and not very scary haunted house story similar to "The Babadook." These halves never connect and the entire project breaks down with out so much as a gasp.
