I think this movie is one of my favorites because 1.) It's a period piece, set in the early 1900's. The costumes and settings are so beautiful. 2.) The three lead actors. 3.) Martin Scorese's directing. I love the restraint in the 3 main characters. Even though Newland loves Ellen, he marries May because at that time NY high society people did what was proper. In Newland's case, he does the right thing, but feels trapped his whole life. In the end, he realizes what was really relevant and comes to terms with his decisions.
