A brilliant adaptation of Tony Kushner's Tony and Pulitzer prize winning plays that were written and performed in the early 90s. HBO has taken the two installments - Millennium Approaches and Perestroika and adapted them into a 6 hour mini-series with an all-star cast that received multiple awards for their performances.
The plot is somewhat complicated - 7 characters' lives slowly intertwine as they deal with many issues in New York City in the mid 80s - homosexuality, religion, AIDS, politics, along with every human being's basic desire for love, happiness and companionship.
I studied this play in grad school so my criticism of it is mainly of Kushner's script, and these complaints are small so I won't go into them (my main two complaints are the God-abandoned-us plot and the resolution of the character of Joe Pitt). The performances, however are great and it's met with a sweeping score by Thomas Newman that only adds to the emotional power of the text. It's pretty long, but not to be missed, particularly for the performances.
