Heavy material, probably too challenging

While the actors certainly should be given credit for handling a difficult and highly emotional story, sadly there are too many cliches here to make for an enjoyable viewing. A young man is killed in a car accident in the early moments of the film and the family goes through the grieving process. Pierce Brosnan is the father who grieves by never speaking of his son, Susan Sarandon is the mother that is full of anger, there's a teenage rebel screw-up (of course) who just wants attention, and so on. Carey Mulligan plays the girlfriend who discovers she's pregnant after the opening death, which is an original touch but we never really get to know her character that much to be invested.
