A noble effort that in the end just doesn't quite work. The cast is strong, (particularly Mirren), the effects interesting, and you can't go wrong with Shakespeare. Unfortunately, the performances come off as a little stagey, the costumes have a strange, modern look, and the 3 story lines that run fine on stage don't translate well to the screen. It's like trying to keep track of 3 different movies whereas on stage they flow together. Again, I think the effort is notable and I credit Taymor with trying to bring this classic to the screen, but it just didn't work out.
