This probably could have been a lot better than it was, but unfortunately a disappointing script from Dustin Lance Black holds this film back. The film tries to be a biographical drama about J. Edgar Hoover, but there's too much back and forth between an older Hoover reflecting on his tenure as director of the FBI (including highlights from his career) and how Hoover lived out his last days. This means the film can't create any momentum or build to anything because just as each story gets interesting it flips back to the other one. Normally I'm pretty impressed with Eastwood's directing, but in this case I wasn't as the actors, especially DiCaprio, are a little too showy. I just couldn't identify with any of them.
