This is the first film outing for the Next Generation cast. It also is the first (and very forced) meeting of captains from both series. It's an okay film introduction for the new cast and a pretty bad finale for the last cast.
The villain played by Malcolm McDowell (and as usual with Malcolm since the 1980's, it's well acted but a poor acting decision) is one of the least threatening antagonists in the series. It's a cool idea that the character is supposed to be a drug addict who is just trying to get his next fix (his drug being getting back into the Nexus; a heaven like world) but he just seems like the weakest and most uninteresting villain in the series. It's made even worse that the villain in this movie *SPOILER* is the person who actually ends Cpt. Kirk's life in the entire franchise of Star Trek, yes, CPT. KIRK!!! *SPOILER END* I'd probably forget he even existed if I were asked about the villains in a Star Trek movie. Other than that, not a very good A-Story line, and as I pointed out before it's such an obvious gimmick to put both captains of the Enterprise in this movie, to the point that the initial idea isn't even exciting.
The idea of the Nexus is a cool one. Once we see Cpt. Picard in this dream world that is the Nexus, I thought it was a pretty engaging, atmospheric, and somewhat emotional scene. Also, (sue me) I thought the idea of Data with the emotion-chip was the best part of the film. Data's character will almost always make people think about humanity on some serious level, and with this emotion-chip, we see even further into our own condition and how we deal with our emotions.
