First of all, the plot for this movie has got to be one of the most backward-ass, ludicrous plots out of any movie ever, and this is a STAR TREK FILM! Seriously, I guess you got to give if credit for being original, but the storyline is about the crew traveling back in time to modern day 1986 to retrieve humpback whales, the only beings that can successfully communicate with an alien probe...what were they smoking? Nimoy does a very decent job at directing, but there is some unneeded corniness and tacked-on plot devices like Kirk's love interest. The love interest happens to be the woman who works at the aquarium and watches over the whales in 1986. The end is predictable and kind of unfulfilling, but besides those minor problems, I think ST:IV is one of the more original and creative entries into the series.
I don't think there is any argument that Voyage Home is by far the funniest of the movies. You get to hear Spock swear, Chekov ask a real life cop about "wessels", and basically see the whole series poke fun at itself and its characters as they have to deal with our time period. It's much more character oriented than a lot of the other Star Trek movies, and shows a lot of cool little things to look at (ex. a quiz-computer that Spock uses in the beginning of the film).
