Backdraft is one of my all-time favorite movies, primarily for the spectacular visuals. Never before, and never since, have I seen fire given such a wonderful treatment. Horrifying, mystifying, entrancing, exciting, sensual, this film shows fire in so many wonderful ways.Fortunately, there's also some plot, writing, and performance interest to the film as well. Other films have stunning visuals ("Twister" comes to mind), but lack many of the other elements that make a good film. But "Backdraft" has these elements at least to the degree required to make the film enjoyable beyond the sheer beauty of the fire footage. The fire effects in "Backdraft" are amazing but the story of two brothers trying to work together is very impressive too. Ron Howard makes the fire seem like it's a living thing and I liked that. With the brothers (Kurt Russell and William Baldwin) trying to prove themselves and great performances by Donald Sutherland and Robert De Niro this movie is great fun.
