It's the Wild West, and Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) is one of the most wanted criminals in the area. When a poor rancher, Dan Evans (Christian Bale), finally catches the varmint, he agrees to bring him along to the 3:10 train to Yuma, along with his son William (Logan Lerman) and Grayson Butterfield (Dallas Roberts). But the road won’t be easy, because Wade’s men are out to free him in the wild movie “3:10 to Yuma.”
The way this story is told in the fashion of the westerns of the John Wayne era, which is a nice breath of fresh air these days. It’s great to see a film that tells it like it is and doesn’t have some underlying message to push on its audience. It’s just a fun movie that you can watch and not have to think about too much, but in a good way. There are a few minor problems with dialogue and the like, but to point them out is just being picky.
The characters are entertaining while still being tough. Regardless of the character, you would definitely want them to be on your side in a fight. Russell Crowe and Christian Bale excellently counter each other, keeping their relationship real all the way through. Their characters develop genuinely and create two great personalities on screen.
There’s lots of action and great sequences that keep you wanting more from beginning to end. The music is reminiscent of the old westerns, giving the film a very rustic feel that puts you right there with them.
“3:10 to Yuma” is a thrill of a western that keeps you entertained even at its slowest, which isn’t often if even present. Even if you are not a fan of westerns, there is a great chance that you will love this film.
