Rain Man

Review - Rain Man (1988)

Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) never knew he had an autistic brother until his father passed away and left his fortune to the elder son, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). In order to get the money, Charlie decides to take Raymond and become his legal guardian in the Best Picture winning film, “Rain Man.”

Cruise and Hoffman work wonders together. Cruise proves how much of a jerk he can be, while Hoffman gives one of the greatest, most innocent performances I’ve ever seen. You can truly feel the emotion growing between the two characters throughout the film. Their bond works on so man levels that they give the film a deep, wonderful feeling that I believe they didn’t even set out to give.

The story also grabs your attention from the beginning and keeps you wanting more. The film is filled with light-hearted comedy through tragedy as we follow the two across country. The best thing about the writing is that it’s real. Everything that happens is done so realistically that you feel as if the characters are real people, which they most likely are in some way or form. It’s also important to note that this film brought to light the workings of autism. I personally have been diagnosed with a form of autism, Asperger Syndrome, so I felt connected to this film, even if I don’t have any near as strong a case as Raymond.

For a movie that never seemed to have set out to be anymore more than a fun dramedy, it is a wonderful and well-deserving award winning feature.
