Review - Bee Movie (2007)

Barry Benson (Jerry Seinfeld), a bee, spent his whole life waiting for the moment that he could work in the hive, not realizing that he would be stuck with the same job for the rest of his life. Knowing this, he decides to leave the hive and explore the world. He meets a florist named Vanessa (Renée Zellweger) and discovers that honey is being harnessed for human consumption, and decides to sue mankind over it in "Bee Movie."
Dreamworks has never been known for quality entertainment for me. This being the case, I was a little weary on seeing this film. Surprisingly, I actually did enjoy it more than I expected to. Seinfeld apparently wanted this film made for a long time, and it does show that he put a lot of thought into it. That being said, it's time to rip it apart.
One thing both Seinfeld and Zellweger have never been known for is good acting. I can't imagine what they were thinking when they hired people like Zellweger and Chris Rock (as Mooseblood, a mosquito) to do voices in an animated film. I can't stand their voices normally, so when it's all they really do, it's rather annoying.
If anything is intolerable in this movie other than the unnecessary politics and the questionable jokes (which seem to pop up more and more in "family" movies these days), it's the onslaught of bee puns. Over and over, all the way through the movie, all we get is bee jokes, mixed of course with Seinfeld's brand of humor. The story is interesting and even informative, or at least it is once it starts about halfway in. The structure is a bit rocky, but in the end it feels like it does pay off, and there are actually quite a few good jokes sprinkled on top.
While it's not classic Disney quality, which I never expected, "Bee Movie" does show that Dreamworks can make a good animated movie. If anything, the kids'll like it.
