Review - My Fair Lady (1964)

Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) didn’t respect anyone on Earth other than himself, which began to show the moment he met Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn). He wagers that he can turn her from a street urchin into a duchess within a matter of weeks, and set out to do so in the Best Picture winning film, “My Fair Lady.”

The one thing that always seems to trouble people with this film is Rex Harrison’s speak-singing throughout all of his songs. While I found it charming in his first song, it seemed to get boring and make all of his songs sound too similar by the end of the film. Audrey Hepburn, however, did a marvelous job playing both a common flower girl and a respectable young lady.

There’s really not much to this film. There are some wonderful songs that to this day are very well known, while there are a lot of songs that aren’t really worth mentioning. One problem I had with the film was that about half of the film could have easily been recordings of a stage performance, meaning that there was no depth to the scenes at all. It is a very by-the-book movie musical that breaks few boundaries from stage to film.

Through all of its flaws, though, “My Fair Lady” is a charming and highly enjoyable film that will stand the tests of time as a pure classic.
