Review - The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

Fred Derry (Dana Andrews), Homer Parrish (Harold Russell), and Al Stephenson (Frederic March) were three World War II veterans who came home after the war. They each face difficulty adjusting back to normal life in the Best Picture winning film, “The Best Years of Our Lives.”
After a bit of thinking, I realized that this is a very deep film. The title itself can be taken in several different ways. I to date have never known anyone who has gone off to war, so I hadn’t thought of this subject matter until now.
While the acting was a little too average for the time, the movie is real and emotional. The characters all have their own personal lives that are ruined and at times saved because of their experiences in the war.
“The Best Years of Our Lives” is an okay movie, albeit a little too anti-war at times. I don’t think I’ll ever be watching it again, but I could recommend it if you have the time. It is a little long.
