Review - How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

All the whos down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch (Jim Carrey), who lived just north of Whoville, did not, and he attempts to destroy the holiday in Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think director Ron Howard has ever known what he’s doing behind the camera. I don’t think he has a vision as much as a style for his films. I can’t really put all the blame on him though, because about half of this film was improvised by Carrey. This is another example of Carrey trying to hard to be himself. I guess they just wanted to have fun with this one.
I will say that this is one of the few big-budget Hollywood movies with an all-star soundtrack that’s actually worth listening to. All of the songs, performed by Barenaked Ladies, Smash Mouth, Ben Folds, and even Carrey himself, are filled with the Christmas spirit.
While “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” does not have the qualities of a classic that the original cartoon had, it’s still a cheerful movie that I’ve ended up watching every Christmas since it was first released.
