Review - Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007)

Dave Seville (Jason Lee) was a down-on-his-luck musician who just needed that special something to make his songs sell. That’s when three talking chipmunks, Alvin (Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney), ended up raiding his home. Their rise to stardom is seen in “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”
It seems that trailers these days can really manipulate how you view a movie. I started watching this movie with hatred in my mind. From the start I wanted to hate this movie so much. Turns out, it was actually not nearly as bad as I had feared.
I was never a huge fan of the chipmunks when they were just a cartoon show, but I actually enjoyed this movie more than I expected. I’ll probably never watch it again, but it had its pros. For one, at times it can be excruciatingly cute, especially anything involving Theodore. I also liked how they didn’t just focus on Alvin like expected, but gave all three chipmunks their fare share of dialogue and screen time.
As for Jason Lee, well, I’ve never thought of him as a great actor or even a good actor. This shows pretty well here where he can’t deliver a line without sounding rehearsed. David Cross (as Ian) really steals the show though, which I’m surprised I would say considering I normally can’t stand the guy.
“Alvin and the Chipmunks” is a modern, very “pop” movie, but the humor is there and the music is actually not that bad. If anything, I may never watch it again, but I might buy the soundtrack.
