Review - Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)

After Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly) cut his brother in half, he decided to cope with life by becoming a musical legend. He lives the life of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll in "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story."
I’m not sure how to start this review because there are so many different ways I look at this movie. I guess I’ll just start off negatively like I always do. That being said, I can’t understand how on earth they got away with calling this movie a comedy. There’s barely anything resembling a joke or a gag, let alone a funny one. The whole thing is just “let’s make fun of ‘Walk the Line,’” rather than “let’s write clever jokes and satire while following a general storyline similar to ‘Walk the Line.’” This is probably not even what they were going for, but I think that’s just my love for classic parody shining through.
Even though the movie was trash, I thought the acting was okay for some. Reilly did surprisingly well, given the material he had to work with. At least he delivered his lines in a less “I was on Saturday Night Live” way than Tim Meadows (as Sam). Jenna Fischer (as Darlene Madison) is actually not that bad here, playing a completely different character than Pam on “The Office.”
While parodying “Walk the Line” didn’t work out, the music written for the movie actually sounds really good. The lyrics are probably the best written part of the movie, so the soundtrack’s worth listening more than watching the movie.
When “Walk Hard” isn’t constantly using the same gag over and over, it’s using bad gags that don’t fit anywhere at all. I definitely recommend the soundtrack, but stay away from the movie unless you’re a die hard Meadows fan.
