Fun and Fancy Free

Review - Fun & Fancy Free (1947)

In a film split into two stories, we see the adventures of a circus bear named Bongo and a Disney re-telling of “Jack and the Beanstalk” starring Mickey Mouse (Walt Disney). Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards), from “Pinocchio,” makes his second Disney feature appearance as the host in the double-dose movie “Fun & Fancy Free.”

I don’t know why Disney thought this sort of thing was a good idea, but I guess it worked. I think he really liked doing shorts, but also really liked doing features, so he just decided, “Why not do both?” Thus, we get several mini-movies grouped together as features. This isn’t his first, and it certainly wasn’t his last.

That being said, I’ll get to each part individually. “Bongo” is a forgetful story told by Dinah Shore about a circus bear that escapes from his cage and falls in love with a wild bear. It’s nothing special and easy to overlook. I’m pretty sure Bongo hasn’t shown up much since, as I don’t think anybody really ever liked him. Still, it’s a cute story.

“Mickey and the Beanstalk” is the real treasure here, giving us Mickey, Donald (Clarence Nash) and Goofy (Pinto Colvig) together in a daring epic. I remember loving this when I was little, and today I’m still very attached to it. I actually remember fast-forwarding past “Bongo” just to get to this.

“Fun & Fancy Free” is one of those Disney movies you should only really see if you’re just that into Disney movies. I’m sure little kids love it, but it’s just not much to look at.
