Review - The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything (2008)

Avast ye maties! This be a tale of pirates, but it isn’t the one you’re thinking of. That ones over for now. No, this one is about three vegetables who defy all odds to become heroes. In “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie.”
George, Sedgewick (both Phil Vischer) and Elliot (Mike Nawrocki) were simple cabin boys working at a pirate-themed restaurant when they find a ball that sends them back in time to the 16th century. While there, they are told by a princess that they must save her brother from an evil pirate. Though they know they’re not heroes, they accept and end up on an adventure of nutritious proportions.
I’ve been a fan of VeggieTales for a few years now, longer than I can remember at least. I’ve always liked the witty humor mixed with Biblical morals that Vischer and Nawrocki put into their work. Their first movie, “Jonah,” was a good transition from home video to the big screen, but this comes off as a very lazy attempt, unfunny attempt at regaining fans. And for the record, I think the videos are slacking lately too.
Everything done in this could have been easily done for a DVD instead. For “Jonah” they gave a unique twist in animation, making the environments bigger and more interesting, whereas with this they didn’t really challenge themselves. Even the voice acting I’m surprised hasn’t changed over the years for the better. They sort of found what works and don’t seem to want to further.
While “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything” could have been worse, it also could have been much much better. I’m hoping if they try this again, they’ll go back to bible stories and add a lot more humor.
