Review - Over Her Dead Body (2008)

Back in 2005 we got a movie called “Just Like Heaven” about a woman whose spirit haunted the new owner of her old apartment. Three years later, we get “Over Her Dead Body” and we have to ask ourselves whether there really are any new ideas left in the world of entertainment.
So here we have Eva Longoria Parker playing Kate, a really annoying woman who dies on her wedding day and just can’t seem to move on. Her husband-to-be Henry (Paul Rudd) meets a psychic named Ashley (Lake Bell) one year later and falls in love with her. Kate wants nothing of this of course, so she decides to drive Ashley insane by haunting her until she breaks up with Henry. Yeah, this is the plot they use for an hour and a half.
Every moment of this movie is trash. The jokes are stale, unoriginal, and some are even just unnecessary. Why do people in Hollywood think partial nudity is still funny? It’s just annoying, particularly in the context it’s used in movies like this. I take this movie as a very bad sign for the future of comedy, because we’re really heading downhill lately.
I wish I could say that at least the acting was tolerable, but that just isn’t the case. The characters are so unemotional that you really don’t care about any of them. Henry can’t let go of his feelings for Kate, yet he’ll make a joke at her expense at the drop of a hat. I don’t think the actors really got what they were doing. Sure, it’s a comedy, but it’s a realistic comedy (aside from the ghost thing), so show a little sympathy for these characters!
Over my dead body will I ever see this movie again. I couldn’t probably dissect every moment of “humor” and tell you why it’s not funny, but I don’t do autopsies.
