George A. Romero is seriously a legend in the zombie genre of films. Really, George created zombies and because of him, we have such good films like 28 Days Later and other zombie flicks. The one thing which annoys me though is the fact that there are a lot of bad zombie movies out there which try to copy George in many ways. With this so called remake, Day of The Dead is one of those good try attempts. I have to say that this is not really a remake, the director Steve Miner uses the same title but with everything completely different from the classic. Now, this film was certainly more then what I had expected, as I thought it would turn out to be another House of The Dead except with Boll in the mix. It turned out to be actually ok on my scale, because Friday The 13th Part 2 was also ok.
Mena Suvari plays as Sarah, the little army girl of the film which we find out isnt so little. Since this is a more low budget film, I didnt expect the acting to be top notch. For some reason, I dug her performance more than anybody else in the movie. I actually thought it was cool that we were introduced a female lead which is the toughest character in the movie. Micheal Welch plays as Sarah's brother. I thought his little performance was convincing, but he couldve done so much better. Also spotting parts in the movie are the ever so great Nick Cannon and Ving Rhames.
Steve Miner really has grown since he did the Friday The 13th sequel, because some of the directing in this was great. While the film was certainly pretty low budget, the camera wasnt the best he could possibly use but he made that up with some great shots. The film was a little dark, but that really pumped up some of the moments in the movie to the next level. The film also pumps up the level of gore that is featured. There is no Unrated DVD, which actually surprises me because the movie felt like it wouldve been unrated. Most of the blood is CGI (big surprise there) but a lot of it looked great.
Bottom Line: There are a lot of bad things about the movie, the one thing being the Spider Man like zombies and just the film failed on equal levels. But the film was also kind of fun so it evens out.
