In all honesty, I did not expect Across The Universe to be as good as the finished film was. As I saw the previews in multiple films in theatres, I never really sported that "I want to go see that" mood about the movie. A close friend of mine though is in love with this movie, so we rented it along with No Country For Old Men and Death Sentence. Certainly, Across The Universe takes about 90% of all The Beatles songs and re does them, making them sound more retro and just better then originally played.
The thing which really made me study this movie and just keep getting more and more involved with it was the fact that it's not just a musical. While the bigger percrentage of the film is filled with trippy, mind boggling dances and venues for the songs and actors, the main plot that sorrounds all of this is really great. The film takes place during Vietnam, a time when riots and plenty of governmental arguments were spread around. So a lot of the content in the movie deals with the violence and unnecessary actions that America took during the war.
Every song that is played in this movie were originally played by The Beatles, and while I cannot get into the Beatles at all, I actually really liked some of the more retro versions in the movie. With my two favorites being Hey Jude and Strawberry Fields, I thought the movie did a good job in taking the songs and what theyre about and wrapping them around a very complicated story.
Some moments in the film are very trippy and strange. While these moments were being played, I really felt like I was drunk or on drugs because colors were changing and people were flying, plus soldiers with really big chins.
Bottom Line: A really amazing movie.
