Tony Scott is one of the most interesting and complex directors in the film world today, as for Deja Vu, starring Denzel Washington and Val Kilmer, Tony takes the very simple process of changing time and space and makes it into something interesting, fun and just cool to watch. Deja Vu is a perfect example of a well made thriller with a hint of science fiction and mystery involved. Tony Scott has worked with Denzel before on Man on Fire, as both Denzel and Tony did a great job in whole creating an amazing movie.
In Algiers, New Orleans, after the explosion of a ferry transporting the sailors from the USS Nimitz and their families with 543 casualties, the lonely AFT agent Doug Carlin is assigned to investigate the terrorist attack. Without any lead, he is informed by Sheriff Reed about a corpse of a woman that was found one hour before the explosion, but burnt with the same explosive. He is invited by FBI Agent Pryzwarra to join the surveillance team leaded by Jack McCready in the investigations, using a time window and Einstein-Rosen bridge through seven satellites to look back four and half days in time. He discloses the identity of the mysterious dead woman called Claire Kuchever and decides to follow her last moments trying to find the criminal. Along the surveillance, Doug falls in love for Claire and tries to change destiny, saving her life.
Denzel Washington is seriously a talented actor. I saw him recently working with Spike Lee on Inside Man, which Denzels performance was undeniably great. With the role of Doug Carlin, he must mix emotions and fear with a really hard boiled character in the middle of it. Tony Scott is really a great director, the way he edits all the movies make them better then they would have in the dailies. With many quick cuts and the brightening or speeding up of light, the movie looks interesting visually to watch.
Tony Scott and the writers really gutted out the idea of time travel. Next was a film made recently about time travel which wasnt that good, but Deja Vu simply takes it to the next level. Introducing new and interesting devices and technology which hopefully give us a hint to expect in the future. Tony basically took time travel and changed every element of it, mixing in with it time and space bends to make it sound more scientific then fictional.
Deja Vu also has some very intense action moments. While they may take a while to develop, the explosions in the movie are huge and all the scenes are simply elevated to the extreme.
