All of the Takashi Miike films I've seen are of the strange and wondrous variety - 13 Assassins is a straight-up Samurai film (in the vein of Seven Samurai) that, while it doesn't shy away from violence, focuses more on character and story. Loyalty, honor, respect - it's all here, along with one of the best battle scenes in recent memory.
