Nurse 3D

One Bad Nurse is Bloody Good Fun

Nurse 3D really is a throwback kind of movie to the days when sex and blood went hand in hand - and it isn't afraid to flaunt its stuff. The film does an excellent job of balancing eroticism with horror - and it doesn't skimp on the violence. The characters may be a bit hard to identify with - but most are caricatures anyway, so sympathy kind of gets thrown out the window. For any horror fan, this is a good choice, provided you're not a prude.

Paz de la Huerta is the main focus here as Abby, who we are soon introduced to as a kind of avenging angel - nurse by day, vixen by night, who flaunts her sexuality in order to lure married men into her trap so she can kill them - in her twisted mind, their wives and children (and pocketbooks) are much better off without this scum in their lives. Once back at work, she finds herself drawn to Danni (Katrina Bowden) a nurse fresh out of school, and wastes no time taking her under her wing - which includes taking her out for a night on the town where she drugs her in order to procure some blackmail pictures for later use.

She also learns Danni's father is another adulterer, while also taking affront at the head Dr. Morris (Judd Nelson, looking like he's having fun being a sleazeball doctor) and his antics. As Abby becomes more and more obsessed with Danni, she also looks to break up her relationship with boyfriend Steve (Corbin Bleu), a police officer. Needless to say, it doesn't take long for Danni to realize how dangerous Abby really is - but the more she tries to convince those around her of her true nature, the more it backfires as Abby stays one step ahead of her. Several bodies later, and Abby and Danni are on a collision course - and the payoff is epic (and bloodier than ever).

As with movies like this, most of the characters are depicted in the worst possible light - all men are cheating scum and all the women are insane - jealous, manipulative and downright scary at times. I don't agree that Abby is a "hero" by any stretch - yes, adultery is terrible - but I'm not sure it warrants quite this much retaliation. Yet you have to feel somewhat bad for Abby when you learn just why she turned out the way she did - but that doesn't forgive what she does in my mind. The closest thing to a sympathetic character is Danni - but even she isn't perfect.

However, if you look at this film not as having some overreaching social message, but rather as just a bloody good show that reminds us of some more grindhouse days - that's where you'll have the most fun with it.
