May have played things a bit safe, but one cannot deny the on-screen chemistry between Viggo Mortensen (who is also a master of eating and drinking anything and everything in the film) and Mahershala Ali (who deservedly won the Oscar for his role). It has humor without being depreciating and sheds light on a too-unknown virtuoso while revealing prejudices of the not-so-distant past that continue to reverberate to this day. It's safe, but still satisfying.
