Very Pleasantly Surprised

Others have prefaced their reviews by saying what huge Mel Gibson fans they are. So I'll preface mine by saying that I'm *not* a fan of his in general. I've enjoyed some of his films, but I don't think he's a terribly good actor.
That said, I think he really took it up a notch in this one. It's his best performance that I've seen. The film is emotionally involving (and sad) and fairly intelligent. If you're looking for a high-octane action movie, you might want to look elsewhere, but if you want a suspenseful drama, this is worth a look. Now I'm curious to see the original BBC miniseries. I wonder what they left out?
