Though “uneven” is definitely on-the-mark in describing Pure, other words fit. How about banal, uninspired, and stupid-as-****? Molly Parker and Keira Knightley play two East London heroin-junkies whose using affects ten year-old Paul. The rest you know – Paul is taken away from his mother (Parker), social workers enter the scene, Knightley loses her baby….
Add an inappropriately maudlin piano score and run-of-the-mill performances, and it’s a nauseating 96 minutes. Knightley, in explaining to Paul why she shoots up, delivers one of the best/worst lines in cinema this year – “When I want to cuddle, a bag gives me cuddle.”
