Like Watching a Train Wreck....

Overnight is a documentary chronicling the rise and fall of Troy Duffy, writer and director of The Boondock Saints. I've been meaning to watch this one for awhile and I finally got around to it thanks to those Blockbuster Online in-store rentals. Basically Duffy was a bouncer and bartender at a pub in Hollywood who sold his script for Saints to Miramax. His deal included $300,000 for the script, a deal to direct with final cut, a soundtrack deal for his band, and Harvey Weinstein would buy the bar he worked in. The movie starts just after the deal is offered. We can already see that Duffy is a pretty big asshole, but it is absolutely shocking how much more of an asshole he becomes and the rate he descends into complete egomania. This film is like watching a train wreck or one of those bad accident videos on YouTube. You want to turn it off, avert your eyes, but you can't. It's captivating. It's amazing to see Duffy's downfall, which results in losing his life-changing deal and the film being totally buried. Even the end-note on the fact that Saints took off on DVD is depressing; Duffy didn't get any DVD, VHS, or foreign sales rights in his deal. Check this one out if you get the chance.
