It's not just a place. It's a state of mind.

Shaun Brumder (portrayed by Colin Hanks, the son of Tom Hanks) is a high honors student who is desperately hoping to get into Stanford University. The movie opens with Shaun talking about his life before becoming a good student, he was an average kid that loved to surf, and hang out with his friends. One day he comes across a book in the sand of the beach, that is written by a teacher at Stanford named Marcus Skinner (played by Kevin Klein). Shaun is so infatuated with the book that he decides that he would like to become a writer, so he spends all of his time writing.
When the guidance counselor makes a mistake and sends his application in with the wrong transcript (one of a stoner that applied to Stanford as a joke) and obviously fails to get accepted (and the stoner gets in).
The remainder of the movie is Shaun doing anything and everything to try to get accepted.
Jack Black is by far one of the funniest guys ever. He plays Lance the drugged out slacking brother to Shaun that has huge dreams of success but no ambition or motivation to get there. Lance is the funniest part of the movie, the outtakes are the best! I always get a kick out out of watching this film even if just for Jack Black. The other A list celebs in this movie include Catherine O'Hara, John Lithgow, a walk on by Chevy Chase (keep his rolls small and he can still be funny), Lilly Tomlin, and Harold Ramis.
