This was the movie that I wanted to see sink Titanic! I refused to see Titanic because of how much I liked this movie. The story was brilliant, the acting superb, and being from the Boston area I loved seeing that they did film it in Boston and Cambridge. Robin Williams was awesome in a role that while it wasn't his break away role from comedy, tied him to a different genre of film.
The plot concerns an MIT school janitor (Damon) from South Boston ("Southie") who has a special gift when it comes to numbers. Rather than apply that skill, Will prefers hanging out with his childhood friends drinking, getting into fights and carousing with women. When Will completes a mathematics equation posted for the "real" students at MIT, a math professor becomes curious and tracks down Will. Seeing his potential, he takes Will under his wing. As a condition of his freedom (Will's arrested for assault), Will must undergo therapy. After running through "shrinks" like women run through nylons, the professor seeks out his old college roommate (Sean), also a hard case and when Will and Sean finally begin to trust each other, things change for Will in his thoughts about his future and in his relationship with Driver.
I just loved everything about this movie from the clever dialogue to the interesting compilation soundtrack between Elliot Smith and Danny Elfman. The acting was top notch feeling real and unstaged, thanks in no small part to the fact that Affleck and Damon didn't hold back with the dialogue choosing a real conversational manner over moviespeak.
This movie was in my mind nothing short of brilliant.
