I read the book when I was in 7th grade and after the book was finished the teacher thought it would be good for us to be able to watch the movie. My opinion of the movie may be somewhat biased these days as I didn't have much interest in the civil war at the time, and the book wasn't one that I really wanted to read at the time. The film was well done for its time, and the effects were decent, and if you are a fan of the book the movie stays quite true to the story.
