Having read all Sherlock Holmes stories I will say that the Holmes in the movie is a lot more fun than the one in the book. This different take on Sherlock is appealing. His loyal friend and companion Dr.Watson also seems more intelligent and a better fighter.
The best thing about the movie is the action. Holmes's one on one duels with his opponents is very memorable and there are plenty of other good action sequences as well. There is also a good deal of humour(something which is rare in the books except for frequent sarcasms). But the story was a bit disappointing. Personally I feel 'black magic' stories are a bit outdated(and exasperating) for today's generation. Still this story does suit the time in which it is set(there was a lot more superstition back then). Although we are shown Holmes's brilliant deductive reasoning(some resulting in humorous and awkward situations) and intelligence there seems to be little more emphasis on the action. The end of the movie also seems to promise a good sequel.
This movie is satisfying and entertaining but could have been better with a different story.
