One of 2010's Best

This film is a masterpiece of nuanced and beautiful performances. The historical background is lovingly realized and recreated in a very believable manner that doesn't sidetrack from the friendship relationship between the two leads that serves as the main plot of the film. Colin Firth delivers a tour-de-force performance, of course, but Geoffrey Rush is just as fantastic, matching him beat for beat. The scenes where we witness the back-and-forth between the student (who is, of course, the highest authority in England), and the teacher are witty, emotional, and extremely well-written. The film is a lot more light-hearted and funnier than I expected, but when the dramatic moments occur, they really hit home.
