Lazy, Messy, and Pointless

I wanted to like this movie, I really did. Rogen and Chou are charismatic actors and I'm a big fan of Michel Gondry's visual style. The film itself has isolated scenes and lines that demonstrate the sharp satirical humor the film was going for in, apparently, lampooning the serial super hero genre. The problem is, the film isn't really about much, other than to showcase these random sequences of characters interacting. Sometimes this works, but, mainly, it doesn't. There is a villain, there is action, there are heroics and explosions; but all of it is sort of plotless and half-assed. Rather than craft a sharply-written and driven film with a strong heroic team and fearsome villain, the film sort of shuffles through cutting corners and half-realizing ideas. Rogen and Chou's characters meet inexplicably in one scene and then are best buddies in the next because, well, the movie needs them to be. Cameron Diaz shows up, but doesn't have much to do other than stand around and smile a lot. I like super hero films that attempt to go against the grain and subvert the genre, but The Green Hornet may have gone too far and simply becomes somewhat of a lazy slacker comedy of a super hero film.
