All About Relationships

There is definitely a specific and intimate style with which this film was shot that makes it intriguing and involving. Edward Yang uses naturalistic and overlapping dialogue to capture the intersecting lives of a Taiwanese family that manage to capture very small and nuanced moments of real emotion. He parallels this by also shooting the film in a very static style; often, the camera stays fixed on a single shot while the characters move in and out of frame. Often very beautiful and poignant.
