Avoids the Sophomore Slump

Doesn't hold the same fascinating depth as Johnson's first film, but The Brothers Bloom is an often funny, lighthearted caper romp that packs an emotional punch by its conclusion. Johnson is a master at creating fully-realized quirky characters and razor-sharp dialogue. Rather than make a con movie that spends a long time detailing the planning and execution of the con (ahem, Ocean's Eleven + sequels), it uses the con as a backdrop for a compelling film about the relationships of his characters.
