Cassavetes crafts a film that isn't overboard in its surreal approach to a woman having an emotional breakdown. Similarly, Rowlands gives a masterful performance that isn't too over-the-top, yet still displays a full range of emotional highs and lows. The low budget feel of the film allows the performances to be more noteworthy.
