Peter Weir's war film has an old-school, classic adventure film feel to much of it, akin to the better moments of Casablanca or the African Queen. The film falters in the middle, when some of the coming-of-age material is bogged down by poor pacing, but it rises again by the end, when Weir skillfully recreates the intense battle of Gallipoli.
