It's All About the Performances

I felt like the plot of this film was all over the place and for about the first half of it, I wasn't sure I was into the movie, despite its critical acclaim. The film wins me over by the end with its two powerhouse performances (it is, after all, a film that is more about people than plot): Nicholson's regretful, desperate washed up pianist and Karen Black's unhinged, clingy girlfriend character. These performances are what eventually makes the film stick with you after closing.
