The first installment in the Nightmare on Elm Street series is the scariest and most dark, before the series ventured into campy territory. Robert Englund presents a creepy and unsettling villain. The film does a lot with subtle atmospheric cues, but it isn't afraid to be shocking and gory in a few choice scenes.
