As a grand retelling of Ivan the Terrible's biography, Eisenstein masterfully combines symbolism, powerful performances, and some clever visual trickery into an arresting tale of revenge and power struggle. The film, despite its age, works well because of Eisenstein's understanding of using visuals to tell a commanding story.
