A Crime Film That Isn't About the Crime

Although it starts out like a murder mystery whodunit, this creative noir quickly becomes a slow-burn investigation of the simmering relationship between its two leads. Humphrey Bogart does an excellent job of crafting a nuanced character whose frustration at his own failures in life gradually grows into a maddening rage. The film moves is strongest when it lets Bogart command the scenery and the explosive ending is one of the actor's best scenes.
