Iron Man effectively marks the reign of Marvel's new, expanded universe. It's a smart version of a comic book film - based around likable and interesting characters, competent action sequences, and with the right mix of comedic timing and dramatic tension. Robert Downey Jr., in full-on career rejuvenation mode, anchors the film, presenting the perfect translation of Iron Man's sarcastic playboy alter ego. The film also features some fun turns from the supporting cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow as Tony Stark's coy assistant and director Favreau as Stark's bumbling driver. My one complaint would be that the villain, played by a gruff Jeff Bridges, isn't nearly as compelling as the film's hero and, as such, the final confrontation is lacking in energy, but this is certainly one of the more consistent and fun super hero films in the genre.
