What starts out as a pretty standard noir becomes a dark masterwork that uses a basic whodunit to frame a tragic tale of a broken family. The film is populated with fully-fleshed and interesting characters - from the scheming and leaching Monte Baragan to Mildred's materialistic daughter, Veda. The cast is impressive and gives life to what is already a sharply-written script. I went in expecting a typical weepy drama and came out blown away by the freshness and intensity of the film.
