David O. Russell's latest film is a unique look at the collision of two fractured human beings and the fragile romance that develops. It's darkly funny (but not in a forced way) and also humbly life-affirming. The film doesn't try to sugarcoat its characters' struggles, which is a refreshing thematic shift (though the ending is a little too neat.) Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have strong chemistry and the film's acting, as a whole, feels natural and improvised.
