This is a heist story told without frills. Melville creates an intriguing cast of characters with differing goals and motives, but roots his characters in reality. We can believe that these characters can come together to pull off this heist (which they do, with brutal efficiency) and we don't need Hollywood special effects or flashy backstories to get drawn into their web of deception and plotting. The film's masterful heist scene is famous for its economy of dialogue and straightforward attention to detail, but, really, the whole film offers in a very observational manner - as if we are given a brief glimpse into these characters' lives.
